What are Scope 1 Emissions?

Scope 1 emissions are direct greenhouse (GHG) emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or owned by an organization. They can come from the following sources:

Fuel combustion - Emissions from burning fuels in vehicles or equipment (e.g. furnaces, generators) that your company owns or controls
Industrial processes - Emissions that are produced inherently by an industrial process, such as through a chemical reaction, or from leakage of refrigerants. Emissions from manufacturing cement, steel, ammonia and other chemicals would fall in this category.
Waste - Emissions (mostly methane) from treating waste at facilities that are owned or controlled by your company.
Agriculture, Forestry and other Land Use - Emissions from agriculture and land use. This includes livestock and manure management, soil management and fertiliser use. Also includes carbon removals from land use change (e.g. Afforestation).

What are Refrigerants emissions?

Refrigerants emissions are a type of Scope 1 emission that occur when refrigerants leak or are used in cooling systems like HVAC or refrigeration units. These emissions are classified under the Industrial Processes category of Scope 1 emissions, occurring either through normal operations or unintended leakage.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Check if you’re required to upload refrigerants data

Users are only required to upload refrigerants data if their or has operational control over the HVAC systems. Operational control means that the organization owns or directly manages the HVAC systems, including making decisions about their maintenance and usage. If an organization does not have operational control, users can skip the steps below, as uploading refrigerants data is not required.

Step 2: Upload preparation

Go to Unravel Carbon and log in
Click on “Measure” and “Upload data”.
