What are Scope 3 Category 1 emissions?

Purchased Goods & Services emissions from the extraction, production, and transportation of goods and services purchased by your company. Also known as cradle-to-gate or embodied emissions. This category includes all the consumables and services that your company uses as part of its day-to-day operations.

Which template do I use?

To begin measuring Scope 3 category 1 emissions (purchased goods & services) on Unravel Carbon’s platform, please download the ‘Purchased Goods & Services’ template on our platform.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1: Downloading file templates

  1. Access the Unravel Carbon main site and log in.
  2. Click on ‘Measure’ in the sidebar, then select ‘Upload Data’.”

  1. Click “Download file template” in the upper right corner of the page.

4.Select the type of file template you are looking for. Click on "Download. Refer to the details in the guide to determine which template to download.

Step 2: Preparing your data

How do I fill in the template?

For our engine to transform your data into emission figures, we would need the following information:

Where can I find this data?

This data can also be found within systems in your company. The following table explains where you might find the information you need.

(Purchased Goods & Services) This data will likely be found in your ERP / procurement system(s) / bill of materials. You are recommended to engage your Finance / Procurement / Operations team(s) for this set of data.

Our Upload Data feature streamlines the process of adding emissions information by providing simple, user-friendly templates for all scopes. These templates guide users in organizing and submitting their data consistently, reducing complexity and minimizing errors.

The following is a guide on how to upload file templates onto the platform:

Upload an excel / csv template.

  1. Go to Unravel Carbon

  2. In the sidebar, press “Measure” and “Upload Data.”

  1. Select “Upload Data” in the category of data you wish to upload. Use the filters on the left side of the page to narrow the category list.

  1. Select the file and tab to upload from the File Upload menu.

Mapping data columns

  1. A list of uploaded datasets will be displayed. Click “Next.”

  1. Columns in the dataset are automatically mapped to the columns required on the platform. For columns that are not mapped, you can select the relevant column in the drop-down. Mapping allows for columns with different headers to still be mapped to our default templates, and allows for easy upload of users’ data.

Fix data format errors

  1. If there is a data formatting problem, it will be flagged by the platform. Click “Fix Format Errors” to automatically correct formatting problems.

<aside> 💡 Some emission categories require uploaded line items to have a unique transaction ID, and it is important that the business facilities of the uploaded data set map exactly to those set up in the organizational structure.

If there is an error in the date or country name (e.g., wrong case, misspelling, added space bar, etc.), our platform will flag these errors.

  1. Click on the ‘Import’ button in the lower right corner.

  1. Once the upload is complete, you can check the status of the uploaded file on the “Data History” page.

Emissions calculation agent

If you have existing data that doesn’t fit into our standard templates, you may use the emissions calculation agent to quickly transform your data.

Step 1: Navigate to the emissions calculation agent under “Measure” → “Upload data”

Step 2: Attach or drag and drop your file

Step 3: The agent will take some time to detect the data type and perform the necessary transformations. Type in the chat box if you have a particular instruction for the transformation.

Step 4: When the data has been successfully transformed, proceed to submit the data onto the platform.
